Interview Preparation Guide for the ICGP GP Training Program 2026

Software Setup:

• Download the Zoom App – Available on Desktop.

• Perform a Zoom test.

• Conduct an internet speed test: Ensure both download and upload speeds are at least 2Mb/second.

• Note: Should you encounter any issues, please contact your panel administrator.

Environment Setup:

• Secure a quiet room free from background noise.

• Ensure the room is appropriate for the interview and free from potential interruptions.

• Confirm no recording devices, including mobile phones, are in the interview room.

Device Recommendations:

• Utilize a laptop or tablet with a functioning camera, microphone, and speaker.

• If using a tablet, place it horizontally for optimal viewing.

• Devices should be movable for a 360° room view.

Zoom Credentials:

• Have your meeting ID & password ready. These will be emailed to you in advance by ICGP.

• Always log in with the name as per your application.

Validation Process

• Photo ID will be verified.

• Candidates will need to screen share to ensure no notes or apps are open.

• A 360° view of the interview location will be required.

Online Simulation Process

• In the 2026 interview process, the format will shift to an online simulation. There will be three stations, each lasting 10 minutes. In each station, you will interact with a trained actor, who may take on the role of a colleague, a patient, or a patient’s relative.

• It is highly likely that each of these roles will be represented across the three scenarios, meaning you may encounter one of each type during the assessment.

• Each station will focus on a different area of assessment, and your performance across all three will contribute to your final interview grade. Together, these simulation stations will carry a 40% weight towards your overall interview score.

The Interview Panel

• Each panel comprises 2-3 individuals: one main interviewer and one or two scorers/observers who may switch roles for the next scenario.

• Observers will mute their microphones and turn off their cameras during the interview.

• Interviewers won't have access to your application details, SJT or CPST results, or references.

Lead Interviewer

• Will guide you through the entire interview.

• Will ensure you can see and hear them clearly.

• If issues arise, such as broadband connectivity problems, inform the interviewer immediately.

This year, the ICGP has introduced online simulations into the interview process. These simulations involve realistic roleplay scenarios where you may be asked to interact with an interviewer acting as a patient, relative or colleague.

To help you prepare effectively, we have included a range of online simulation roleplays in our resources. These are specifically designed to reflect the new interview format and to guide you on how to approach these interactions with confidence and clarity.

Understanding how to manage these scenarios is essential, and our updated simulations will give you the practical experience needed to perform well.

When approaching any roleplay during the interview process, it's essential to focus on effective communication and empathy. Here are some guidelines to help you in these scenarios successfully:

1. Understand the Scenario

Before you start, make sure you clearly understand the context and the characters involved in the roleplay. Know who you are supposed to be and the relationship dynamics between the characters.

2. Set the Tone

Begin with a calm and professional greeting. Establish a rapport quickly to make the simulated interaction as realistic as possible. Your approach should be composed and attentive.

3. Show Empathy

Demonstrating empathy is crucial. Always acknowledge the patient's or relative's concerns and emotions. This shows you are not only a skilled practitioner but also a compassionate one.

4. Active Listening

Listen carefully to what the 'patient' or 'relative' is saying without interrupting. This will help you gather necessary information and respond appropriately.

5. Clear Communication

Use clear and understandable language. Avoid medical jargon unless it's explained. Ensure your explanations are concise and that you verify the patient's or relative's understanding of the information given.

6. Address the Concerns

Respond to the concerns expressed during the roleplay appropriately. Provide reassurance where needed and explain the next steps or any medical processes involved clearly.

7. Close Properly

End the interaction on a positive note. Summarize the key points discussed, and make sure the patient or relative feels heard and understood. Thank them for their cooperation and patience.

8. Reflect on the Performance

After the roleplay, take a moment to reflect on how it went. Consider what went well and what could be improved. This reflection will help you in subsequent roleplays.

Utilize the information, sample responses, and roleplays provided in the course to enhance your understanding and practice how to effectively approach roleplay scenarios.

Recording:

• All interviews will be recorded by ICGP, primarily for quality assurance.

• Recordings will be deleted at the end of the interview day.

• Candidates are strictly prohibited from recording the interview.

Resolving Technical Issues:

• Common issues include sound or Wi-Fi disruptions.

• Possible solutions: mute/unmute, camera on/off, or re-logging into the Zoom link.

• If unresolved, the interview might be rescheduled for later in the day or the following day depending upon the policy and ICGP decision.

Addressing Concerns:

• Raise any issues on the interview day for them to be addressed promptly.

• Declining to mention a concern during the interview may restrict grounds for later appeals.
